7/28: Dr. Andrew Hsu, President of College of Charleston

July 28, 2026

Our featured speaker was College of Charleston‘s President Andrew Hsu, who shared the remarkable momentum underway at one of Charleston’s most historic institutions.

Under Dr. Hsu’s leadership, the College has:

• Increased annual applications from approximately 11,000 to nearly 34,000

• Prepared to welcome the largest freshman class in its history

• Expanded engineering, health sciences, nursing, and doctoral programs

• Secured significant philanthropic support for scholarships, facilities, and academic programs

• Continued investing in student success, career readiness, and the future workforce of the Lowcountry

Dr. Hsu also addressed the challenges facing higher education, including increased competition, demographic changes, artificial intelligence, housing, and the changing landscape of college athletics. His message was clear. The College of Charleston is honoring its 256-year tradition while preparing students and our community for what comes next.

We also honored one of our own with the Rotary Community Impact award: Congratulations to a very deserving past-president Alissa Leitzow.

For the 2026/2027 Rotary year, President Olayinka H. Babalola has introduced the theme “Create Lasting Impact”, encouraging members to focus on meaningful, sustainable change in their communities and personal growth through Rotary service. This theme builds on last year’s message “United for Good” by emphasizing not just collaboration by the tangible, long-term effects of Rotary projects globally, locally and personally.

Global Grant Scholars Our club is pleased to be sponsoring two candidates for a Rotary Global Grant Scholarship this year.   Global Grants are for graduate students studying abroad in one of Rotary’s areas of focus:

  2. Fighting disease
  3. Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
  4. Saving mothers and children
  5. Supporting education

  7. Protecting the environment

WELLNESS TIP
Fix Your Posture
Good posture can support good form when exercising, helping you to avoid injuries while active. But what does good posture look like? According to Harvard health experts, good posture means having your shoulders and hips even, chin parallel to the floor, and weight evenly distributed on both feet. If you’re feeling a little out of balance, simple exercises can help to improve your posture. Focus specifically on stretches and activities that build muscle strength and improve your balance. Ask your healthcare professional for help if needed.
