4/28: Megan Skelley, Blood Cancer United

April 28, 2026

Our guest this week was Megan Skelley of Blood Cancer United. Megan gave us an overview of the impact the organization has in helping those stricken with all types of blood cancer and especially lymphoma here in the Lowcountry. They achieve their mission through research, patient support, and advocacy. The organization addresses other types of cancer through its foundational research on blood-based diseases. They have a simple goal: by 2040:  to provide an additional 1 million years of life to cancer patients. Rotarian Sean Holleran gave an overview of the organization’s major fundraiser campaign for the year.

More fun on tap at the Riverdogs for our May social and two big fundraisers in the works – the Duck Race and our Far, Near and Here raffle – our biggest fundraiser of the year. Check out the Keyway for details on these and other upcoming events and schedules.

Spring RCCF Grant Recipients Recognized

On behalf of the club and the RCCF Committee, Past President and RCCF Chair Paul Stoney was proud to recognize and present RCCF Grant checks to 5 organizations this past Tuesday.  Camp Rise Above, represented by Allison Carter, will be using our funding to assist with the funding of brand-new campers with cognitive and physical disabilities from Charleston County to attend the adaptive day camp in July. Our club’s support helps them to expand the program to welcome children that would otherwise not have access.

Charleston Miracle League, represented by Jessica Pisani along with special guests Joey and Charlotte Jenkins, was recognized as a RCCF Grant recipient.  Our funds were used and presented as awards to three Special Needs Teachers from Charleston County – one elementary, one middle and one high school teacher. President Karla presented the checks at the Charleston Miracle League games. This was a wonderful opportunity for three organizations – Charleston Miracle League, CCSD and the Rotary Club of Charleston to demonstrate what can be done to enhance the lives of these special needs individuals and recognize their outstanding teachers.

Charleston Progressive Academy, represented by Laura Shaw, was presented with a check to fund the purchase of a wireless handsfree microphone headset with transmitter, 100 jump ropes and general classroom supplies. The microphone headset will be used for leadership rallies, school assemblies and PE classes. The jump ropes are awarded to students who complete the Active Gamecock Competition. Teachers will use some of the funds to purchase classroom supplies not provided by the school district.

Conflict Resolution for Kids, represented by Catherine Wilhoit, will use our funds to support the creation of a fully interactive, teacher facing digital Four Corners platform. The Four Corners tool is the framework for addressing basic conflict, translating sophisticated mediation theory into developmentally appropriate tools for children, parents and educators.

Lowcountry Maritime School, represented by Rachel Bergquist, was presented with a check to fund three children to participate in the RC Boat Program. The students meet once a week to assemble and build their boats, giving them an introduction to robotics. Once complete, they use instruction time to learn sail theory, teaching Earth sciences. They then take their boats to a nearby water feature and apply those teachings as they compete amongst each other in the RC Boat Races.  We were pleased to support all these organizations and their efforts in our community. We will be recognizing 4 additional organizations in the coming month.

Club Seeking Outbound Exchange Student for 2026/2027 School Year

Our club is currently accepting applications to sponsor a local high school student for an outbound exchange for the 2026/2027 school year. The Rotary International Youth Exchange Program offers teenage high school students ages 15-19 an opportunity to make new friends, learn new ways of living, open themselves up to different ideas, a new culture, traditions, experiences, and to adapt and gain fresh perspectives while attending high school in another country and living with 2- 3 host families arranged through the local Rotary Club. Typically, the exchanges offer the same benefits to host families. The parents of sponsored outbound students for the exchange program will need to be one of the hosts for the Charleston Rotary Club’s sponsored inbound students (for 3-6 months), while their children are overseas on their exchanges.

  • The students selected for sponsorship will go overseas in August 2026, for the 2026/2027 school year, attend high school and will be hosted by 2 to 3 families and the local Rotary Club in the host country.
  • The Charleston area family of the sponsored student will need to be one of the hosts for our sponsored inbound student that will arrive in August 2026.

CCSD currently supports this program and is accepting inbound international exchange students at various Charleston County high schools for the 2025/2026 school year and has done so for many years. The following is a website link for additional link formation: Rotary International Youth / Student Exchange Information: Youth Exchanges | Rotary International . Interested students and families will need to complete an application, engage in an interview process, and attend online and in-person training before the exchange year begins in August 2026.

Rotary International 2025/2026 Theme:  Unite for Good The 2025-26 presidential message, announced at the 2025 Rotary International Assembly in February, will remain Unite for Good, which calls on Rotary members to be a force for unity in a world increasingly divided by politics, geography, and ideology. Through service projects, Rotary brings together people of every background — across races, religions, and professions — in a shared mission to do good in their communities.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Sean Holleran

Sean Holleran gave us a glimpse into his background. He was born Hodgenville, Kentucky which where where Abraham Lincoln was born. And Sean’s home was on lands given to his family by George Washington. So no surprise that his “presidential roots” keep him involved in historical organizations and activities like the Sons of the American Revolution and America 250. After graduating form University of Louisville, Sean entered the banking and financial services industry, in Louisville, then Savannah, before finally landing in Charleston ten years ago. In addition to diving into the local business community, he is active in his church and plays the pipe organ.

WELLNESS TIP Prioritize Mindfulness and Mental Well-Being

Spring invites new beginnings, making it an ideal time to focus on mental wellness. Simple mindfulness practices, such as meditation, deep breathing, or journaling, can help you reduce stress and gain clarity. Taking just a few minutes each day to practice gratitude can shift your mindset and improve emotional well-being.
