7/23: Chris Tate, Bicycles for Humanity

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

July 23, 2024

We were pleased to have Chris Tate join us to discuss Bicycles for Humanity, which is an exciting international project that our club along with other area Rotary clubs will partner with over the next two years.  The organization collects bicycles and ships them to community-based organizations in developing countries.  The bicycles are loaded and delivered in 40ft. containers, which remain and are run as community bicycle workshops. There will be many ways Rotarians can volunteer and assist with this project in the coming year. If you are interested in becoming involved, please reach out to Karen Clark or Sandy Morckel.

Rookie of the Year Award to Whitney Schillerstrom

The Historic Rotary Club of Charleston has an annual “Rookie of the Year” Award.  This Award is presented to a Rotarian who has been in the Club less than 18 months and has had a major impact.  This person has shown enthusiasm in demonstrating ‘Service above Self’ while also provided leadership in our Club.

This year’s recipient joined our club as a new member in January of 2023.  She immediately jumped in and volunteered on our social committee coordinating our many fun social events over the past year. She was also chosen by the Board to attend this year District Conference as an “Emerging Leader”. This year’s Rookie of the Year is Whitney Schillerstrom.  Whitney – we’re so glad to have you as a member!

RCCF International Grant to OneWorld Health

At our meeting Tuesday, we welcomed Missie Parker with OneWorld Health (OWH), a nonprofit dedicated to providing quality healthcare to people in need. OWH builds healthcare facilities that provide a full scope of medical services and are designed to be affordable and accessible. Missie is also a Rotarian from the Daniel Island Club.

Our International Grants committee voted to recommend approval of a $2400 grant to OWH to finish a healthcare facility in Kyenjojo, Uganda, which our Board approved in June. The grant will finish funding the construction of a public health pavilion for prenatal visits and nutrition education for expecting mothers, along with under-5 immunization clinics. Using our grant for the Kyenjojo facility allows OWH to start construction immediately and be operating and fully sustainable within one month of receiving the funding.

Missie gave us an overview of OneWorld Health and their mission and values, as well as some startling statistics on the impact of lack of quality healthcare for women and children, and how they have impacted this space with their facilities in Africa.

Congratulations and best of luck to OneWorld Health!

WELLNESS TIP

Walk more

Heading out for a stroll boosts your physical and mental health, so it’s well worth adding to your list of healthy daily habits.

On the physical front, regular walking supports your immune system, reduces joint pain and makes it easier to maintain a healthy weight.

Any exercise helps your mental health, and that includes walking. If you want to shift your daily habits to combat symptoms of depression or anxiety or to boost your mental wellness in general, make it a point to lace up your walking shoes each day.
