Communities In Schools Luminary Event
Our own Rotarian, Past President David Burt, is the Chairman of the Board for Communities In Schools of South Carolina (CISSC). For those of you not familiar with CISSC, here’s a link to a short 3-minute video that explains the integrated student support that CIS provides to more than 24,000 students in 39 Title I schools (K-12) across South Carolina. Many students struggle with food and housing insecurity, live in single parent households and face complex barriers related to poverty. CISSC connects them to vital basic needs resources. They also provide direct services like counseling, mentoring and tutoring so students can stay in school and reach their full potential in life.
We are reaching out today to tell you about a CISSC Luminary event that will be held at Brittlebank Park in the Lowcountry on Sunday, November 13, 2022, at 6 pm. The date marks the kickoff of National Education Week. Neighbors, community partners, and individuals will gather outdoors to witness the luminary display in honor of CISSC students in three regions of South Carolina: the Lowcountry, Midlands and Upstate. The Brittlebank event will include an inspirational program that celebrates the future of our state through education. Members of the Burke High School band will perform, and girl scouts from Morningside Middle School will lead the pledge. It is a family friendly event, and we will have Rog Pizzeria food truck available starting at 5:30pm.
Thanks to the generous financial support of the Rotary Club of Charleston, CISSC will be able to provide a hot meal to 50 Burke and Morningside students prior to their performance at the event.
We would like to cordially invite all members of the Rotary Club of Charleston to join in and witness this moving event in support of education. If you would like to purchase luminaries in honor of CISSC Lowcountry students, here is the link to the CISSC website.

Rotary Educator of the Month – September & October
This past Tuesday, our Rotary Club was able to continue supporting education by recognizing the Julian Mitchell Elementary School Educators of the Month for September and October. September’s honoree was Jennifer Bermudez. Ms. Bermudez is said to be the best staff member EVER and is always helping others in need. Everyone at Mitchell has trust in her whether it is about curriculum or help with any other issues. She runs their PLCs well and is willing to collaborate, share resources and ideas for All Block. She has been a collaborative co-teacher and welcomes visitors in her classroom. She is a PLC leader while also taking on the challenge of new learning to support ELA. For October, our honoree was Grace Finlay. Ms. Finlay is a fantastic additions to the 5th grade. She did an amazing job at the Charleston Hope event explaining her why to donors and members of Charleston Hope. Ms. Finlay is a wonderful advocate for her 5th grade students and proves this time after time. She is always kind and loves her students.
We congratulate both these outstanding educators on being recognize as a Teacher of the Month!

Hosts Needed! Our Club’s TWO Youth Exchange Students Have Arrived and We Need Host Families
IMPORTANT!!!! We are still looking for local families to host both female exchange students for a period of 3-5 months in 2022/2023. This is a great opportunity to volunteer and change the life of a young person and expose yourself and your family to a different culture! All of the prior students have been wonderful and a delight to get to know!
Both of our exchange students will attend the same high school locally for the entire year, so it is important that the host families are in the same school area (and it is convenient to travel to and from). They will be attending the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science located at: 1002 King Street, Charleston SC 29403.
If you are interested in hosting one of these students for a couple of months, please reach out to either Karen Clark [email protected] or Richard Sidebottom [email protected].

Each girl will attend the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science located at: 1002 King Street, Charleston SC 29403.
Please note that a host family or couple needs to have the desire to provide the following:
- Love as a family member. The student will be a part of the family, not a guest.
- Transportation- The student will not be allowed to drive while in the US.
- A Bed-The student does not have to have his/her own room, but we do ask that they have their own bed.
- Food- We ask that you provide food for the student, including lunch while at school. Again, treating the student as you would your own.
If you are able to volunteer for this opportunity, please go to http://yehub.net/SC1-hfapp and complete the online Host Family Application as soon as possible. We need to line up our first host soon for each girl. Please note that Hosts do not need to be a part of Rotary, so it’s okay (and appreciated) if you share with other couples and families that you feel may be interested.
The application can be done on your smartphone, tablet or PC. You will also need to consent to a background check as part of this process. Please note the following:
You will need two references (emails, street addresses & phone numbers for each). Also, include photos of your home including: student bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, family room, exterior of home and a casual family photo (smaller sizes work best) in the application.
Please review the attached checklist for an overview of the process and timeline.
Once you complete the application, we can schedule a time for me to visit you and your family at your home to go over some additional information and also address any questions or concerns you may have.
