August 9, 2022
We welcomed Darrin Goss of the Coast Community Foundation and Amanda Lawrence of Trident United Way – two high-impact organizations who trace their roots to our Rotary Club. A great overview of what these two groups do. Don’t forget the River Dogs social happening August 30. Still some tickets left. Also a chance to get your hands dirty with a new service project on August 20 at Future Fresh Farms. See info below
Darrin Goss of the Coastal Community Foundation and Amanda Lawrence of the Trident United Way joined us on Tuesday. The Coastal Community Foundation will be celebrating 50 years since its founding in 1974. They work to create communities rich in equity, opportunity and well being by uniting people and investing resources so that all community members have a pathway to achieve their goals. They started with a $9000.00 grant and now manage a portfolio of over $380M. They serve all counties on the coast of SC and have affiliate foundations, Waccamaw Community Foundation, Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation, Saul Alexander Foundation and the Jewish Endowment Foundation of Greater Charleston. Strategic Pillars of the foundation are Education, Economic Mobility, Coastal Resilience, Culture, Identity and Equity, Physical and Mental Well Being and Family Philanthropy and Future Leadership. They have awarded over $25M in grants and scholarships during the last fiscal year.
The Trident United way’s Mission Statement is to be a catalyst for measurable community transformation in education, financial stability, and health. Areas of focus include preparing children for success, helping people work and be fiscally stable, and creating a healthier Tri-County. TUW also works closely with Coastal Community Foundation among other groups to understand how they can make the greatest difference. They are a data driven entity with evaluation and learning systems in place to make sure they are engaging the community and have accountability for using community resources. Strategic data driven initiatives include Foodshare Berkeley which includes partnerships with Point North Church and Berkeley County School System.

Celebrate the US Coast Guard
On August 4th, the U.S. Coast Guard celebrated its 232nd birthday.
The Coast Guard is one of America’s six armed forces and traces its founding to Aug. 4, 1790. That’s when the first Congress authorized construction of 10 vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the collection of federal revenue. Responsibilities added over the years include humanitarian duties such as aiding mariners in distress.
The service received its current name in 1915 when the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service to form a single maritime service dedicated to the safety of life at sea and enforcing the nation’s maritime laws.
The Coast Guard is a multimission maritime military service. Its mission is to protect the public, the environment and U.S. economic interests in the nation’s waterways, along the coast, on international waters or in any maritime region as required to support national security.
If you see Owen Clary, give him a hug.

Youth Exchange Students Arrive
Our club is hosting two youth exchange students this school year. Jenny, our Youth Exchange student from Taiwan, arrived early this past Friday and was greeted and welcomed by her host family and a group of members from our club.
Our second student, Lula from France (left) , arrived this past Tuesday. All members will have an opportunity to meet our students as they will be attending club meetings, events and service projects throughout the year.
Hosts Needed! Our Club’s TWO Youth Exchange Students Have Arrived and We Need Host Families
IMPORTANT!!!! We are still looking for local families to host both female exchange students for a period of 3-5 months in 2022/2023. This is a great opportunity to volunteer and change the life of a young person and expose yourself and your family to a different culture! All of the prior students have been wonderful and a delight to get to know!
Both of our exchange students will attend the same high school locally for the entire year, so it is important that the host families are in the same school area (and it is convenient to travel to and from). They will be attending the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science located at: 1002 King Street, Charleston SC 29403.
If you are interested in hosting one of these students for a couple of months, please reach out to either Karen Clark [email protected] or Richard Sidebottom [email protected].
This is a great opportunity to volunteer and change the life of a young person and expose yourself and your family to a different culture! All of the prior students have been wonderful and a delight to get to know and stay in contact with!
Our exchange students will attend the same high school locally for the entire year, so it is important that the host families are in the same school area (and it is convenient to travel to and from). Each girl will attend the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science located at: 1002 King Street, Charleston SC 29403.
Please note that a host family or couple needs to have the desire to provide the following:
- Love as a family member. The student will be a part of the family, not a guest.
- Transportation- The student will not be allowed to drive while in the US.
- A Bed-The student does not have to have his/her own room, but we do ask that they have their own bed.
- Food- We ask that you provide food for the student, including lunch while at school. Again, treating the student as you would your own.
If you are able to volunteer for this opportunity, please go to http://yehub.net/SC1-hfapp and complete the online Host Family Application as soon as possible. We need to line up our first host soon for each girl. Please note that Hosts do not need to be a part of Rotary, so it’s okay (and appreciated) if you share with other couples and families that you feel may be interested.
The application can be done on your smartphone, tablet or PC. You will also need to consent to a background check as part of this process. Please note the following:
You will need two references (emails, street addresses & phone numbers for each). Also, include photos of your home including: student bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, family room, exterior of home and a casual family photo (smaller sizes work best) in the application.
Please review the attached checklist for an overview of the process and timeline.
Once you complete the application, we can schedule a time for me to visit you and your family at your home to go over some additional information and also address any questions or concerns you may have.

WELLNESS TIP
Add Some Greenery To Your Office Space
Regardless of whether your workspace is at home or in the office, adding some plants to your workspace is a great way to improve its look and feel. There is even scientific evidence that suggests interactions with indoor plants can reduce physiological and psychological stress.
