August 2, 2022
Willis Cantey of Cantey Technology gave us an insightful presentation on how technology can improve our lives, but also some of the risks to be aware of from a security standpoint. Don’t forget the River Dogs social happening August 30. Still some tickets left. See info below
Willis Cantey joined us on Tuesday. Willis Cantey is a graduate of the University of the South at Sewanee and the Masters of International Business Program at USC. He is the Chairman of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and serves on the board of the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities as well as the Historic Charleston Foundation. He is also the CEO of Cantey EDU, a technology support and logistics company supporting standardized academic assessments in 17 states. He and his wife, Susanne, are the proud parents of two children. When he has free time, he surfs.
He started about 15 years ago and didn’t really know anyone but heard there were three things he needed to do. Have breakfast at the Variety Store because that’s where business is done, joined the Historic Rotary Club and get out to happy hours. He talked about how we got technology to take off in Charleston. Much of that dates back to Blackbaud. Tony Bakker was in Long Island and visited Charleston and loved it and moved his small company to Charleston. Thousands have come to Charleston since Blackbaud and many of the small tech companies have their roots at Blackbaud. The digital corridor also contributed to tech growth, creating a place for tech discussions. We now have Benefit Focus, Automated Trading Desk, Boomtown, Fish labs, Blue Acorn as well as an explosion in federal contracting work. Work from home has now allowed people in tech to work from Charleston for anyone anywhere.
Why then is it hard to find good people in technology in Charleston? We need to encourage more students to go into the technology field. We have the programs and the colleges and the kids need to know they can get a good job and essentially work anywhere.
He concluded with some pointers for keeping us safe. Passwords do matter and the more complicated the better. Use multifactor authentication as it can keep you much safer (1000x-10000x). Check your backup systems often to make sure they are working. Restart your computer often and as leaders, train your staff.

Youth Exchange Students Arrive
Our club is hosting two youth exchange students this school year. Jenny, our Youth Exchange student from Taiwan, arrived early this past Friday and was greeted and welcomed by her host family and a group of members from our club.
Our second student, Lula from France, arrives this Tuesday, August 9th on Delta 4697 from JFK at 4:10 pm. If you would like to participate in her welcoming at the airport, please email Karen Clark or Richard Sidebottom. All members will have an opportunity to meet our students as they will be attending club meetings, events and service projects throughout the year.
Hosts Needed! Our Club’s TWO Youth Exchange Students Arrive in August!
The Rotary Club of Charleston still urgently needs local families to host the two female exchange students – Jenny from Taiwan and Lula from France. Ideally, each volunteer Host family or couple would have the student stay with them for a period of 3-5 months in 2022/2023.
This is a great opportunity to volunteer and change the life of a young person and expose yourself and your family to a different culture! All of the prior students have been wonderful and a delight to get to know and stay in contact with!
Our exchange students will attend the same high school locally for the entire year, so it is important that the host families are in the same school area (and it is convenient to travel to and from). Each girl will attend the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science located at: 1002 King Street, Charleston SC 29403.
Please note that a host family or couple needs to have the desire to provide the following:
- Love as a family member. The student will be a part of the family, not a guest.
- Transportation- The student will not be allowed to drive while in the US.
- A Bed-The student does not have to have his/her own room, but we do ask that they have their own bed.
- Food- We ask that you provide food for the student, including lunch while at school. Again, treating the student as you would your own.
If you are able to volunteer for this opportunity, please go to http://yehub.net/SC1-hfapp and complete the online Host Family Application as soon as possible. We need to line up our first host soon for each girl. Please note that Hosts do not need to be a part of Rotary, so it’s okay (and appreciated) if you share with other couples and families that you feel may be interested.
The application can be done on your smartphone, tablet or PC. You will also need to consent to a background check as part of this process. Please note the following:
You will need two references (emails, street addresses & phone numbers for each). Also, include photos of your home including: student bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, family room, exterior of home and a casual family photo (smaller sizes work best) in the application.
Please review the attached checklist for an overview of the process and timeline.
Once you complete the application, we can schedule a time for me to visit you and your family at your home to go over some additional information and also address any questions or concerns you may have.
