Instead, we’ll hold our annual Transition Social at 5 PM at 5 Faber on Tuesday. Our next regular meeting will be July 12 under new president Virginia Lee.

NEWS BRIEFS

Board Transition Happy Hour Social this Tuesday – No Lunch Meeting

In lieu of our lunch meeting this Tuesday, we have a happy hour social from 5-7pm at Hall’s Signature Events. There will be a “brief” meeting, but mostly it will be a fun time to celebrate the year, ring in the new Rotary year and catch up with our Rotary friends.  The deadline to RSVP has expired as of last Tuesday, 6/21. We look forward to seeing you there!

July-Dec 2022 Dues Invoices – Credit Card/Bank Transfers Accepted On-Line

July-December 2022 dues invoices will be emailed this week.  Please look for them in your inbox and pay promptly within 30 days.  There is a new feature and members will receive an invoice instead of a statement. We have upgraded our software and added a new component to our invoicing. We are now able to accept credit card and bank transfer payments on-line.  Members just simply have to click on the “pay now” button on their invoice and make payment.  We hope this new feature will make those of you paying by credit card or bank transfer easier. We will continue to also accept payments by check.

Thank You Pin – Don Oswalt

Our Rotary Club is continuing to recognize former and long-time retired Rotarians, so we may present them with a lapel pin.  The pin was designed by Rotarian Don Oswalt.  In the middle of the pin the initials “TY” = Thank-You.  On the outside of the pin states that the TY is from your Club – The Historic Club of Charleston – Rotary.

This past Tuesday, President Rob Dewey was honored to recognize and thank current member Don Oswalt at his final meeting with us as a member for his many years of dedication and service to our club. Don has been a dedicated Rotarian since 2004 (over 18 years!).  He served our club as a Board Director and has been actively involved in raising funds for our Polio efforts and International Service projects, especially Water Mission. He is also a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. We enjoyed seeing Don this past Tuesday and will miss having him as a member! We wish he and his wife, Kathleen, all the best in their new endeavors.

Our Board feels it is imperative to show appreciation to our former, retired Rotarians, who have given so much of their time, talents and treasure over the years towards making our Club ‘Even Better’.

Spring RCCF Grant Recipients Recognized

On behalf of our club and the RCCF, Past President and RCCF Chair Alex Dallis recognized and presented grant checks to five organizations in our community.

Our own Erica Taylor was in attendance to represent CCSD and their Children In Crisis program. The CCSD Children In Crisis program was established in 2009 and is intended to fill the gap with emergency assistance until a family is connected with local social service organizations in the event of a house fire, unexpected loss of work, etc.  Our donation will assist families at Burke.

Lynn Bowley accepted the check on behalf of Charleston Habitat for Humanity. Charleston Habitat for Humanity helps fill the gap in affordable housing in downtown Charleston, West Ashley, and North Charleston, one new affordable home at a time. Our club’s donation will support 6 sessions (food & materials) for the new Habitat Lunch and Learn project.  During 6 sessions in one year, 15-20 participants will attend the sessions to learn about relevant financial education topics for themselves and their families. These sessions help to inform and educate the public, specifically lower income households and CHFH homeowners on strategies for reducing debt and increasing their financial stability.

Door to Dreams was represented by Sam Clements. Doors to Dreams currently serves the students at N. Charleston High School, Burke High School and Simmons-Pinckney Middle School providing service-learning opportunities and engaging students with their communities. 15 students from Burke, 10 students from Simmons-Pinckney and 30 students from Mitchell Elementary have teamed up for a multi-group project to directly impact the homeless population of the Eastside Neighborhood Downtown Charleston. Our donated funds will assist the students in establishing more blessing boxes in the Eastside Neighborhood and stocking them with blankets, underwear, socks, hygiene kits and snacks.

Stephanie Shuster attended on behalf of Hope to Home Furniture Resource. The mission of Hope to Home is to deliver essential home furnishings to displaced or homeless individuals and families who secure housing. They transform their empty living space into a comfortable home. Our donation will help provide furniture such as beds, dressers and kitchen table/chairs to those who have secured housing, but do not have the resources to set up their homes. If you would like to learn more about this organization, please got their website site www.hopetohomesc.org or click on this link https://www.clf1670.org/associates/ to watch a video.

Congratulations to all our Spring grant recipients.  We appreciate all they do to help those in need in our community. Our club was able to award 12 grants during the Spring giving period and donated over $19,000 to local organizations this year!

Announcement from Membership

We are delighted about the upcoming new membership year, which starts on July.  It will be a tough one trying to fill the shoes of Cleave Ham.  Cleave has done an excellent job this past year and we look to continue that momentum going forward.

New Membership Director Michael Smith and his team are looking for any Rotary members that would like to do small tasks for the membership committee.  This will be very small tasks as we understand everyone has full time jobs.  Volunteers are needed to serve on the Red to Blue Committee or Retention Committee.  Additional volunteers are also needed to serve as Sponsors/Mentors for new members.   Please let Michael Smith or someone from the membership committee know if you can help.  Michael Smith [email protected]

Hosts Needed! Our Club’s TWO Youth Exchange Students Arrive in August!

The Rotary Club of Charleston urgently needs local families to host the two female exchange students. One is from Taiwan and the other is from France. Ideally, each volunteer Host family or couple would have the student stay with them for a period of 3-5 months in 2022/2023.

This is a great opportunity to volunteer and change the life of a young person and expose yourself and your family to a different culture! All of the prior students have been wonderful and a delight to get to know and stay in contact with!

Our exchange students will attend the same high school locally for the entire year, so it is important that the host families are in the same school area (and it is convenient to travel to and from). Each girl will attend the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science located at: 1002 King Street, Charleston SC  29403.

Please note that a host family or couple needs to have the desire to provide the following:

  1. Love as a family member. The student will be a part of the familynot a guest.
  2. Transportation- The student will not be allowed to drive while in the US.
  3. A Bed-The student does not have to have his/her own room, but we do ask that they have their own bed.
  4. Food- We ask that you provide food for the student, including lunch while at school. Again, treating the student as you would your own.

If you are able to volunteer for this opportunity, please go to http://yehub.net/SC1-hfapp and complete the online Host Family Application as soon as possible. We need to line up our first host soon for each girl. Please note that Hosts do not need to be a part of Rotary, so its ok (and appreciated) if you share with other couples and families that you feel may be interested.

The application can be done on your smartphone, tablet or PC. You will also need to consent to a background check as part of this process. Please note the following:

You will need two references (emails, street addresses & phone numbers for each). Also, include photos of your home including: student bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, family room, exterior of home and a casual family photo (smaller sizes work best) in the application.

Please review the attached checklist for an overview of the process and timeline.

Once you complete the application, we can schedule a time for me to visit you and your family at your home to go over some additional information and also address any questions or concerns you may have.
