5/17: Rotary Service Above Self Scholars and CCSD Teacher of the Year

May 17, 2022

We honored some of Charleston’s top scholars in our annual Rotary Service Above Self Scholars award program, highlighting four local students who have distinguished themselves through both academics and community service. We also honored a CCSD Teacher of Year, himself a previous winner of the Rotary Scholar Award when he was a student. Congratulations to all

Rotarian Jeremy Cook presented the Rotary Service Above Self Scholarship to four local students who excel beyond academics by volunteering and assisting others within our community. Honorees for 2022 are:

The first award was presented to Ontaria Alexander from Early College High School. She is a summer camp and Habit for Humanity volunteer. Her teacher introduced her as “the constant embodiment of service above self” She will attend Clemson University upon graduation.
Alexandra Ewing received the second award. She is the vice president of her class at Ashley Hall, participates actively in student leadership and volunteers at Camp Horizon. She has a keen sense of seeing things as they are, and plans to pursue a degree in environmental science. She plan on attending UCLA
The third award was bestowed on Colin Troublefield, a student at Charleston Charter School for Math & Science. He was described as kind hearted with a kind demeanor. He is currently enrolled in the most rigorous courses at his school and makes time to volunteer,  packing over 1000 meals for Lowcountry Orphan Relief. He plans to attend Clemson University upon graduation.
The fourth recipient was Caitlin Forkerway, representing Burke High School. She is the student government president and volunteers as an assistant athletic trainer for her school. She was described as an outstanding scholar and leader. She will attend Claflin University upon graduation.

Upon competition of the award presentations, Donald R. Kennedy was introduced. He was formerly the chief financial administrative officer for Charleston County School District and is currently serving as interim superintendent. He previously worked for several other northern school districts, Boeing and as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force. He discussed his background in finance and his vision for the school district and then introduced A.J. Barnes, Charleston County Teacher of the Year for 2021.

Barnes noted that during his tenure representing educators within the district, he has opened his eyes beyond the four walls of his school and met many great teachers throughout South Carolina. A teacher at West Ashley High, he coaches baseball and is Rotary Scholar recipient. His advice to club members is to “make every moment count and don’t take things for granted. When interacting with students, make sure they understand they are valued and loved.”

Our Club’s Youth Exchange Student Arrives from Taiwan in August!

The Rotary Club of Charleston still needs local families to host the female exchange student from Taiwan that our club is sponsoring, for a period of 3-5 months in 2022/2023. This is a great opportunity to volunteer and change the life of a young person and expose yourself and your family to a different culture! All of the prior students have been wonderful and a delight to get to know!

Our exchange student will attend the same high school locally for the entire year, so it is important that the host families are in the same school area (and it is convenient to travel to and from). She will attend the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science located at: 1002 King Street, Charleston SC  29403.

Please note that host family or couple needs to have the desire to provide the following:

  1. Love as a family member. The student will be a part of the family not a guest.
  2. Transportation– The student will not be allowed to drive while in the US.
  3. A Bed-The student does not have to have his/her own room, but we do ask that they have their own bed.
  4. Food– We ask that you provide food for the student, including lunch while at school. Again, treating the student as you would your own.

If you are able to volunteer for this opportunity, please go to http://yehub.net/SC1-hfapp and complete the online Host Family Application. We need to line up our first host ASAP.

This can be done on your smartphone, tablet or PC. You will also need to consent to a background check as part of this process. Please note the following:

You will need two references (emails, street addresses & phone numbers for each)

Also, to include photos of your home including: student bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, family room, exterior of home & a casual family photo (smaller sizes work best) in the application.

Please review the attached checklist for an overview of the process and timeline.

Once you complete the application, we can schedule a time for me to visit you and your family at your home to go over some additional information and also address any questions or concerns you may have.

WELLNESS TIP

Eat your sunscreen

No, not the lotion in a tube! But real food is actually some of the best sunscreen around.

That’s because sunburn is a type of inflammation, and diet has a tremendous impact on inflammation in the body. Your diet can increase or decrease your skin’s sensitivity to UV rays, as well as its ability to repair itself when it does get damaged.

To reduce your sun-sensitivity and risk of sun damage, make sure you’re eating enough anti-inflammatory foods like:

Healthy fats rich in Omega-3s: Omega-3s help to reduce inflammation in your body and promote healing. Good sources include fish (like sardines and salmon), eggs, flaxseed and walnuts. Omega-3s are also available in supplement form via fish oil and flaxseed oil (vegan).

Other healthy saturated fats: Choose healthy saturated fats like coconut oil, avocado oil and organic grass-fed butter. Saturated fats are the building blocks of healthy skin (and hair and nails).

Veggies: The vitamins and antioxidants in veggies help to protect cells from the effects of UV radiation. Leafy greens and tomatoes are particularly good.

Other antioxidant-rich foods: Antioxidants help reduce inflammation and free radicals in your cells, as well as protect against sunburn and skin damage. In addition to veggies, berries, beans, nuts and green or black tea have high antioxidant properties.

Though the first step of good sun protection is keeping your skin healthy from the inside out, it’s also important to protect your skin with the proper amount of exposure and coverage.
