March 22, 2022
Thanks to Barbara Melvin of SC Ports for joining us this past week to give us an update on the dynamic port situation here in Charleston. Don’t forget our next club social for April at Saltwater Cowboys in Shem Creek. More info to follow
We had a fabulous presentation by Barbara Melvin of the SC Ports at Tuesday’s meeting.
She discussed what is going on in the import supply chain and the importance of building timely and relevant Port Infrastructure.
We cannot blame the pandemic on supply chain issues we have. You must plan decades in advance for Port Infrastructure, we have been losing truck drivers and other logistics jobs but never focused on those as we were building up the Port.
Charleston has moved to number 8 from 9 in the top 10 US ports. For the last few years, US imports have been at capacity and that is why things are backed up with a 26% increase over that time in TEU volume at the Ports.
Money that couldn’t be spent on services during the pandemic were then spent on goods and that has not changed. We are still buying.
Record import volumes tax a rigid supply chain. Short-term solutions such as 24-hour gates don’t really help when drivers need to rest too. The supply chain is a zero-sum game, action in one area adversely affects others.
In FY2019 we had 1,364,000 containers, in FY2022 we plan for 1,475,000 units. Although revenue was expected to decline it has been due to storage fees but which impacts overall productivity.
The East coast will see increased share of Asia cargo due to West Coast congestion and ILWU contract issues. Approximately $3B is planned in capital expenditures through FY2031. Critical Infrastructure includes Wando Retrofit, the New Container Terminal, 2 Inland Ports, and Harbor Deepening.
SC Ports has built unequaled port infrastructure when it is critically needed. The remaining projects include the Navy Base Intermodal Terminal, Hugh Leatherman Terminal Berth 2 and the Wando Barge Operation.

Meeting Update – RSVP Required for all Guests by Monday at 5 p.m.
As those of you who have attended recently are aware, we have returned to a buffet-style luncheon. Our attendance numbers have consistently returned to pre-COVID numbers, so as we move forward into 2022 there will be NO EVITE or need to RSVP to weekly luncheons. We have been printing nametags for guests, so we do ask that if you are bringing a guest (especially a prospective member), please let Carroll know by 5:00 pm on Monday. Also, if you have a dietary restriction, please inform Carroll weekly, so a special meal is prepared for you.
Rotary Educator of the Month – February & March
Again this week, our Rotary Club was able to continue supporting education by recognizing the Julian Mitchell Elementary School Educators of the Month for February and March. February’s honoree is Mary Kate Ward. Ms. Ward uses her knowledge of bridges, number corner, workplaces and OGAP (all terms relating to the math curriculum) to improve math skills. Ms. Ward participates in all leading educator sessions and is a true leader of the professional learning committee. She welcomes all other accelerated school teachers to observe her instruction. She forms strong relationships not just with her students, but their families as well. For March our honoree is Harper Lopiano. Ms. Lopiano goes above and beyond to make sure her students’ social and emotional needs are met. She is doing a great job tackling English language arts. She even learned how to do her students’ hair! She teaches her curriculum with fidelity to the subjects and creativity while still ensuring that her students feel loved every day.

Youth Exchange Host Families Needed
The Rotary Club of Charleston needs local families to host an exchange student (that our club will sponsor), age 15-18 1/2, for a period of 3-5 months in 2022/2023. The families are grouped together and organized through the Rotary Club. This great opportunity to volunteer and change the life of a young person and expose your family to a different culture!
The exchange student will attend the same high school locally for the entire year so it is important that the host families are in the same school area (and it is convenient to travel to and from). Our inbound student will attend the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science which is located at: 1002 King Street, Charleston SC 29403.
A host family needs to have the desire to provide the following:
- Love as a family member. The student will be a part of the family not a guest.
- Transportation– The student will not be allowed to drive while in the US.
- A Bed-The student does not have to have his/her own room, but we do ask that they have their own bed.
- Food– We ask that you provide food for the student, including lunch while at school. Again, treating the student as you would your own.
If you are able to volunteer for this opportunity, please go to http://yehub.net/SC1-hfapp and complete the online Host Family Application. This can be done on your smartphone, tablet or PC. You will also need to consent to a background check as part of this process. Please note the following:
- You will need two references (emails, street addresses & phone numbers for each)
- Also, to include photos of your home including: student bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, family room, exterior of home & a casual family photo (smaller sizes work best) in the application.
- Please review the attached checklist for an overview of the process and timeline.
- Once you complete the application, we can schedule a time for me to visit you and your family at your home to go over some additional information and also address any questions or concerns you may have.

WELLNESS TIP
Kickstart the Day with a Nutritious Breakfast
Your morning meal can have a serious impact on your day. Just as the light impacts our circadian rhythm, evidence suggests meal timing can do the same! According to research, long-term breakfast skipping can dysregulate our circadian clock and even affect lipid metabolism. To prevent this, try kicking off your morning with a nutrient-dense breakfast! You’ll boost energy, regulate blood sugar, and send a signal to your brain telling it that it’s time to start the day.
