12/7 Chloe Tonney, Trident United Way

November 30, 2021

Our own Chloe Tonney spoke to the club about the great work being done by the Trident United Way, and its connections to Rotary

No meetings until January 4 so enjoy your holidays!. But still lots of holiday activities and events coming up so be sure to read through your Keyway this week!

Chloe Knight Tonney, president and CEO of Trident United Way (TUW) addressed the club. Tonney formerly worked the CDC Foundation in Atlanta where she served as chief innovation and strategy officer.

She explained the strong connection and history between the Historic Rotary Club of Charleston and TUW sharing that the original organization was founded as the Charleston Community and War Chest in 1944 by members of our club including Hugh C. Lane, whose son Hugh Jr.  was in attendance.

The vision of the charitable organization is to be the leader in uniting our community to improve lives with the mission of being a catalyst for measurable community transformation in education, financial stability and health. They work in tandem with organizations across the region to solve pressing community issues that no single organization can solve alone.

The impact from 2019 – 2020 has been significant, with nearly $6.3 million in community investments and 252,000 lives improved – one person every two minutes.

Integrated tools used by TUW include Americorp, United Way Resource Connection, Charity Tracker, SC Thrive and the 211 Hotline. To further discuss 211 Tooney introduced Katie Reams, Community Impact Manager for TUW. She shared that basic services include statewide information and referral services, a resource database with 3000 service providers available 24/7, 365 days a year and is accessible and free by phone, online or mobile app and is confidential. Their 2021 calls are up 5%.  In 2022 they will launch a texting pilot to provide basic needs and expand accessibility.

Rotarians Needed for Annual Emancipation Day Parade

Rotary Club of Charleston will assist the City of Charleston in providing volunteers for the 156th Annual Emancipation Day Parade to be held on New Year’s Day 2022.  The Emancipation Day Parade is one of the oldest civic celebrations held in our nation and recognizes the emancipation of slaves proclaimed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. More information here: https://www.charlestoncvb.com/events/156th-annual-emancipation-proclamation-parade~17293/

Volunteers are expected to arrive at Burke High School at 9 am to help coordinate the parade that begins at 11 am. The parade route will start at Burke High School and proceed down Ashley Avenue, ultimately ending at the International African American Museum at Gadsden’s Wharf.  2020 Olympic Silver Medalist Raven Saunders will serve as the Parade Grand Marshal. More information about the Emancipation Day Parade can be found here: https://chsepa.wordpress.com/events/annual-new-years-day-celebration/.

Rotarians and prospective members and their spouses and children 16 years or older are encouraged to volunteer. 14 – 16 volunteers are needed from 9 am – 11 am. Please email Sandy Morckel at [email protected] or call or text 614-306-8856 to volunteer.

RCCF Fall Grant Check Presentation – Lowcountry Maritime School

On behalf of our club and the RCCF Committee, Past President and current RCCF Chair Alex Dallis recognized our final Fall RCCF Grant recipient.

Sam Gervais, Executive Director, attended and accepted the check on behalf of the Lowcountry Maritime School.  Our funds will support the funding of tools that will be used by the students in upcoming programs. To build the boats, students are instructed in the safe use of drills and drivers, block planes, pull saws, bevel gauges and other tools. We congratulate all of our Fall 2021 grant recipients and appreciate all their organizations do to assist those in need in our community.  We were able to grant 8 different organizations this grant cycle.  We are currently accepting grant applications for the next cycle which ends on March 1, 2022.

International Grants Committee – Get Involved

It is that time of year for the International Committee to solicit grants from organizations working to make our world a better place. Our Club has a focus on organizations in developing countries and has previously funded grants in Kenya, Liberia, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Paraguay (to name a few) that work to solve a wide variety of issues facing those communities. Serving on the international grant committee is a great way to learn about impactful organizations around the world. You will also be able to see first-hand how our Charleston Rotary Club makes a difference throughout the globe. Please contact Joseph Tecklenburg, if you would like to help (and helping involves just a couple of meetings!) in this worthy endeavor.

Rotary Foundation year-end giving campaign now in progress

Matching Points Campaign will last until December 31, 2021. Gifts of $100 to $500 will be matched by the District (7770). If you would like to become an instant Paul Harris Fellow for $500, the district will match your donation. Please reach out to Karl Riner to participate or for more information.

You can also donate to Rotary’s efforts to end polio now: https://endpolio.org/donate.

No cash? No problem. We now take Venmo!

Thanks to overwhelming demand by our younger, cash-fee members, the club will now accept Venmo payments. Venmo can be used to pay dues, meals for guests, contribute happy dollars and conduct other transactions which previously required cash, check or credit cards. Simply add @rotaryclubofcharleston as a payee on your Venmo account. Thanks Joseph Tecklenburg for helping us reach this incredible technology milestone!

Rob Dewey is now looking into how we can use Bitcoin to pay our dues.

Charleston 50: Year Two

Charleston50, a fundraising campaign launched by the Rotary Club of Charleston to fund community grants, has already reached 58% of its 2021-22 goal during the first 24 days of our fiscal year!

Begun last year when traditional events were canceled due to COVID, the project is continuing thanks to the overwhelming response by members who donate $500 annually to support deserving non-profits in our club’s service area.

The Rev. Rob Dewey, club president, said, “Charleston50 was a surprise success for us. After decades of supporting projects by selling tickets and sponsorships, we quickly learned that our members value the impact our club has in the community and the easy way they can give through Charleston50.”

Charleston50 members receive several visibility benefits including being listed on the club’s website and on a slide deck visible for 20 minutes before each meeting; a pin; a sticker; and an opportunity to briefly greet club members. Donations to Charleston50 are made through the non-profit arm of our club and are 100% tax-deductible.

Please download and complete the Pledge Form here, and return it via email to Phoenicia Miracle at [email protected].

Important – Face Masks Optional

At its meeting this past Tuesday, your Board re-evaluated our current mask policy.  Due to the decline in COVID cases, face masks are now optional for all Rotarians and visitors, who are fully vaccinated.  Those Rotarians and visitors, who are not yet vaccinated, are encouraged to continue to wear masks.

For the safety of our members and guests, we ask all members to please comply with the CDC guidelines and our protocols.

Change in Membership Status Deadline

If you plan a change in your club member status by January 1, 2022 to Excused, Leave of Absence, E-Member or if you are planning to resign, please notify Carroll in writing NO LATER THAN December 3, 2021.  This change will affect January statement, which will be distributed in mid-December. All current members who officially resign after December 3 will be billed $52 to cover Rotary International dues, which are paid the first of each billing cycle.  If you have any questions, contact Carroll.

Support The CART Fund

It is easy for club members to make individual contributions and support The CART Fund electronically. The CART Fund has a new portal www.mycartfund.org, which you can easily access. As a Rotarian and a DACdb user, you automatically have an account already set-up in your name. Your user name and password are the same as it is for the DACdb.

MEMBER NEWS

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with President-Elect Virginia Lee, Luther Reynolds and Amy Chico.

Rotary Club of Charleston Foundation Chair Karl Riner received special recognition from Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta. Karl served on a District-wide committee led by District Governor Paul Walter, PDG Bernie Riedel and PDG Pauline LeVesque with a goal of raising $1 million in new major gifts to the Rotary Foundation of $10,000 or more. The efforts resulted in $2,147,418 being raised in new outright gifts, pledges and bequests in an 18-month period from donors across teh District. A special Million Dollar Dinner was held on November 6, 2021 at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston for donors to the campaign. Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta and his wife Rashi flew in from India to serve as the keynote speaker for the special occasion. Because the event had to be postponed due to the Covid pandemic, Karl Riner was not able to make the rescheduled dinner. So President Shekhar wrote a personal note to thank Karl for his major donation’s impact on the world. It was presented at our Rotary Club of Charleston meeting on December 7 by Past President Sandy Morckel, who served as Chair of the Million Dollar Dinner. Other major donors to the Million Dollar Campaign included Owen Clary, Steve Dopp and Sandy Morckel.
