9/7: Diane Hamilton, Town Of Maryville

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

September 7, 2021

Our guest speaker this week was Diane Hamilton who gave us a fascinating historical overview of the Town of Maryville, located West of the Ashley. Diane’s detailed research and personal observations were enlightening and informative.   Don’t forget the cocktail networking event at Five Faber on September 21 at 5 PM.

Diane Hamilton joined us for an informative presentation on the history of the Maryville community.

She is a native of Charleston and a retired educator for Charleston County Schools. Received BA from South Carolina State and Master’s Degree in teaching from the Citadel. And has furthered her studies at Cornell, Princeton, Virginia Tech, University of South Carolina, College of Charleston and Coker College.

She has volunteered with My Sister’s House, the Jenkins Institute, YWCA, past board member of Habitat for Humanity in Charleston. She was appointed by Mayor Tecklenburg to the West Ashley Revitalization Committee and in her leisure time she enjoys researching her neighborhood, reading and gardening and has recently published a book on the history of Maryville.

Her interest in Maryville started with wondering what the community looked like prior to the construction of St. Andrews Blvd. Maryville’s history started with the Lord’s Proprietors and the establishment of Charles Towne.  Joseph West was an agent for the Lord’s Proprietors and was given land on what is present day Ashleyville. The land was transferred to John Godfried. By 1879 the property was registered to Mary Richardson Moses Bowen and ultimately had the property platted into lots sold primarily to African Americans and in 1888 they asked that the town be incorporated. While Mary was white, her father (who was once governor of South Carolina) broke barriers by socializing with Freedman and was a proponent for land ownership for Freedman.

Another Mary who was important to the formation of Maryville was Mary Mathews Just, an African American who provided the soul of the new community. Mary Mathews Just help start the Fredrick Deming Jr Industrial School for Blacks, the oldest known school of this type.

The first Town Council Meeting for Maryville was held in February, 1889. Thomas Tobias Carr was the last mayor of Maryville in 1934 and 1936. The charter for the town of Maryville was revoked in 1936 and continued as the community of Maryville-Ashleyville until annexation into the City of Charleston in 1993.

This summary cannot do justice to this fascinating presentation and I encourage you to view the recording.

Charleston 50: Year Two

Charleston50, a fundraising campaign launched by the Rotary Club of Charleston to fund community grants, has already reached 58% of its 2021-22 goal during the first 24 days of our fiscal year!

Begun last year when traditional events were canceled due to COVID, the project is continuing thanks to the overwhelming response by members who donate $500 annually to support deserving non-profits in our club’s service area.

The Rev. Rob Dewey, club president, said, “Charleston50 was a surprise success for us. After decades of supporting projects by selling tickets and sponsorships, we quickly learned that our members value the impact our club has in the community and the easy way they can give through Charleston50.”

Charleston50 members receive several visibility benefits including being listed on the club’s website and on a slide deck visible for 20 minutes before each meeting; a pin; a sticker; and an opportunity to briefly greet club members. Donations to Charleston50 are made through the non-profit arm of our club and are 100% tax-deductible.

Please download and complete the Pledge Form here, and return it via email to Phoenicia Miracle at PMiracle@MiracleStrategies.com.
