8/27: Coach Earl Grant: College of Charleston Basketball

August 27, 2019:

We were fortunate to have Earl Grant, Head Coach of the College of Charleston’s basketball team speak to us on August 27th.

Prior to being named head coach at College of Charleston, Grant served as an  assistant coach at Clemson University and an assistant coach for six years under former Charleston assistant coach Gregg Marshall at Wichita State and Winthrop University. Grant’s first coaching job was as an assistant coach at The Citadel. Coach Grant said when he was coaching at Clemson he wasn’t looking to move. They had recently bought a house in June, was walking the kids to school in August and in September, the College of Charleston needed a coach, so they moved.

One thing he realized as a coach was that as hard and challenging as it is to build a team, or a company for that matter, you are building with people. Never recruit a kid you cannot trust and recruit workers who start early and stay late. The program is built on trust and people who work for what they have. They were fortunate to find that in their initial recruits and on top of that they could score.  He went on that it is not just about winning the game, but that the players will be better men coming out of the program.

Past President Paul goes one-on-one with Coach Grant

Humility is a value he seeks to instill in each player. To teach them to be humble and think of themselves less and others more. To make this point he took the team to Fort Sumter to learn of the history there and to feed the homeless, to help them understand humility. He said if these players don’t realize that it isn’t about them before they have a wife and kids…they will find out quick.

In addition to building the character of the players, Coach Grant promises the parents they will graduate- he doesn’t promise playing time or the NBA but that they will graduate. Although they have won a championship, it needs to be more than that, they are building men.

He concluded that whether you are alumni of CofC, Clemson, USC or the Citadel, this program belongs to Charleston.

NEWS BRIEFS

Rotary Club of Charleston History Moment

At each meeting, President Sandy plans to share some of the snippets of our club’s amazing 100 year history and our impact on Charleston and around the world. It will be a fun trip down memory lane and will also be shared in the Keyway.

THE 30’S (1938-1939)

One of greatest events ever in our Club occurred in 1939 when Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, spoke to our Club. The presentation was made possible by District Governor, Buddy Thornhill. Paul Harris stressed the importance of attendance and said absentees “Broke the circle of acquaintance which Rotary affords.” We helped found and charter our second out-of-town Club in February of 1939—the Aiken Club. (The Aiken Club celebrated its 80th anniversary this year and has 180 members. A couple of years ago, the Aiken Club sadly lost a 44 year perfect attendance member who transferred to the Charleston Rotary Club – our own Owen Clary!!). We also during this time help charter the Georgetown Club, out third Club that we sponsored in the decade of the 30’s. We ended the 30’s with 76 members despite the Depression years.

The 50/50 Raffle started over this past Tuesday with a 1 in 10 chance to win half the pot.  The winning “yellow” ball was not chosen, so bring your cash on Tuesday, Sept. 10 as there will be a 1 in 9 chance to win! You do need to be present to win. Tickets are 1 for $5 or 3 for $10.

No Meeting on Tuesday, September 3

WELLNESS TIP

Take a Tailgate Time-out

It’s an all-American past-time — the tailgate party! Tailgating today has progressed far beyond burgers and chips. You’ll find everything from cheese dip to spicy chicken wings.

Don’t despair: Your tailgate spread doesn’t have to sideline your weight loss plan. Grilled kabobs are great fare on the field. Just skewer veggies, fruits, and lean meat, and soak in your favorite marinade. Seafood, salsas, wraps, and stews are good eating, too. A Crock-Pot of chili — loaded with high-fiber, high-protein beans — is a classic tailgate dish (don’t forget the Beano).

Just remember, alcohol is packed with calories. Enjoy your favorite brew, but switch it out for zero-calorie beverages as the party rolls along. It’s all in how you play the game!
